Nonprofit discounts & grants for churches

Which big-tech nonprofit programs churches can actually get, how to qualify legitimately, and where churches are excluded. Every row links to its source.

The 3 things that decide almost everything

  1. IRS recognition. Churches are automatically tax-exempt, but Google, TechSoup, Canva and most others require you to show IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) status: your own determination letter (Form 1023) or coverage under your denomination's group exemption, proven with a letter from the parent body.
  2. Separate outreach entity. A few programs (Slack, Atlassian, Autodesk, Meta for Work, Tableau) exclude churches or require a "secular community designation". The only legitimate route there is a separately incorporated charity that genuinely serves everyone, like a food pantry or recovery ministry.
  3. Non-discrimination attestations. Google asks you to affirm your organization doesn't discriminate "in either hiring/employment practices or in the administration of programs and services, including on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity." Google publishes no religious-employer exemption (Microsoft does). Some church advisors believe faith-based hiring is protected religious practice; ECFA advises paying full price rather than checking a box you can't honestly affirm. This is a legal question. Talk to your own attorney before attesting.

Google for Nonprofits (umbrella)
Access to Workspace, Ad Grants, YouTube Nonprofit, Maps credits
FreeYES (if IRS-recognized)
US: 501(c)(3) recognized by IRS or group-exempt w/ proven affiliation. Excluded: gov, hospitals, schools. Churches NOT excluded by type. Self-declared/automatically exempt churches not listed with IRS are NOT eligible (support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/2659443).
1) File IRS Form 1023 for own determination letter; OR 2) use denomination group exemption: own EIN + letter from parent showing GEN; Goodstack may reject first try – open a Goodstack ticket 'I'd like my application reviewed' with the umbrella letter (Marlin-Warfield case study, ~1 month). 3) A separately incorporated 501(c)(3) outreach arm can apply on its own EIN.source source source source
